Prof. Frank Trigg, Jr. (1850-1933) "came into this world a slave and was buried a retired college president." He was born in the Governor's Mansion in Richmond as his parents served Governor Floyd. After graduating from Hampton Institute, he became the first black male teacher and the first black high school principal in the Lynchburg public schools. Later he was Principal of Princess Anne Academy, which became the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (1902-1910) and was President of Bennett College in Greensboro, N.C. (1916-1926). He and his wife, Ellen, are buried on the bluff near the Monroe Street fenceline.
