Given in Memory of Harold and Lillian Earley
A spacious gently sloping lawn anchored in the corner by a stately pecan tree provides the setting. On either side of the mulch path are sweeps of over 50 varieties of old fashioned flowering shrubs, small flowering trees, and antique daffodils punctuated from time to time by an unusual architectural relic from Lynchburg’s history.
These deciduous shrubs and daffodils were extremely popular in gardens of the 19th century. Some are well known today; some are enjoying a revival of interest; some are native plants that went out of favor as new hybridized varieties became more popular. Most were chosen for inclusion in the Earley Memorial Shrub Garden because of multi-season interest, low maintenance, and drought and disease tolerance—factors that are still desirable by any standard. Many are resistant to deer damage.
The following shrubs, small trees, vines, and daffodils are individually labeled within the area.
