This is the story of the Old City Cemetery in Lynchburg, Virginia, as told by Jane Baber White, Director Emerita. It’s her personal story as she followed her passion and fascination for the place for twenty-seven years, 1981–2008. She developed a vision and called upon hundreds of friends, new and old, to make that vision a reality and to save the stories discovered along the way. This book is about what she did, why, and how. It is a beautiful portrait of the “gravegarden” she created for a new generation of Lynchburgers. |
Once Upon a Time is told as a series of short stories or memoirs. Topics include building a village of five small museums; developing a renowned heirloom rose collection; putting goats to work on an overgrown hillside; rediscovering local black history; and organizing a funeral parade reenactment. The book is lavishly illustrated with nearly 500 photographs. The images—many of them full‑page—document the Cemetery’s rehabilitation since the 1980’s and highlight the natural beauty of its landscape. |
