Welcome to “The Gravegarden!” Established in 1806, Old City Cemetery is the oldest public cemetery in Virginia still in use. It is the most visited historic site in the City of Lynchburg today, with more than 33,000 visitors annually.

Old City Cemetery is an extraordinary 27-acre public garden and “history park.” In addition to being the final resting place for over 17,000 souls, our grounds are filled with hundreds of varieties of native and heirloom plants, including a nationally recognized collection of antique roses. A village of five small museums helps to tell the stories of the diverse population buried here.
