“Nat Turner’s Bones: Reassembling an American Rebel”

Dr. Kelley Fanto Deetz will discuss the archaeological search for the remains of slave rebel Nat Turner, who was executed in Southampton County, Virginia, in 1831. Turner's gruesome story was told in the recent feature film The Birth of a Nation. This event is co-sponsored by Old City Cemetery and Jones Memorial Library. No experience is required, but potential Old City Cemetery volunteers should have a love of history, historic preservation, or horticulture, and enjoy working with the public.The Cemetery needs volunteers who are able to share their time and talents as tour guides or gardeners. Does the thought of pruning your roses give ya nightmares?  Come join us at Old City Cemetery as we  "demystify" those rose pruning chores.  Learn how to prune climbing, shrub, teas, and miniature roses so they bloom more prolifically in the spring.  This is a hands on workshop.   Come dressed appropriately for the weather and gardening.  We will be outside in the elements. Water is provided.  Please bring your hand pruners and work gloves.  We are selling pruners, handsaws, and…
