Old City Cemetery is restarting a five-year-old project to make needlepoint seat backs for the 24 upholstered chairs in the Edith Lee Reading Room (on the lower level of the Cemetery Center). The patterns are all antique roses, inspired by the beautiful varieties growing throughout our grounds.
We are looking for stitchers to volunteer to sew the canvases, which are roughly 18″ x 18″. We provide all the necessary materials. Volunteers may work on the project at home or at the Cemetery Center. The canvases are not painted, but the patterns are transposed by following a very detailed graph. The technique is very similar to counted cross stitch. Please contact our lead needlepointer Janice Puckett by e-mail at jcpuckett@earthlink.net, or by phone at (917) 749-3824, if you are interested in participating in this project.
Janice Puckett is an expert needlepointer who moved to Lynchburg just over a year ago with her husband Reg. In this short period of time she has been volunteering weekly at OCC in different capacities, from gardening to mailing cookbooks–to now resurrecting the needlepoint project!
